Mathematics
At LCPS we aim to provide a high quality maths education – teaching children the essential skills and knowledge to develop an understanding of the world and create a natural curiosity and love for maths as a subject. We want all children to see mathematics as an interconnected subject and be able to make connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We also encourage our children to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.
"Pupils have a thorough understanding of mathematics. Pupils build up their knowledge,
step by step, based on what they already know. Teachers respond well if pupils do not
understand something."
OFSTED 2019
By following the National Curriculum for mathematics through the Power Maths Scheme we aim to ensure all children:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that children have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
- Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
"I enjoying working with a partner because it helps me to understand new mathematical concepts.
It also allows us to discuss different methods that can be used to work out the answer"
